Hey friends, I hope you’re well. Today I’m sharing with you my entry to this year’s MFT Card Design Superstar competition in the Colouring Virtuoso category. I had an idea that I wanted to try colouring on black cardstock, and I didn’t want to do a floral image, which is all the inspiration I could find online, so I took a leap and just dived in…

I used the Warmest Wishes stamp, which is one of my favourite all time images, and I stamped it on to black cardstock, using white pigment ink. I coloured the image using my Arteza pencils – I’ve listed the colours below:
Hat, scarf & gloves: Turquoise, Ocean Blue, Jade Green, Bobble on Hat: White, Pewter Gray, Cloudy Gray
Coat and boots: Camel brown, Coyote Brown, Cocoa Brown
Leggings/tights: Charcoal Gray, Elephant Gray, Pewter Gray
Skin: Peaches & Cream, Apricot, Pewter Gray
Hair: Espresso, Dark Chocolate Brown

I’ve actually created a YouTube video showing the colouring process (and explaining a little more about the technique I’ve found that works for me), here:
To create the background, I used the Drifts & Hills stencil to create the outline of the hill, and coloured beneath it in white, with the shadows in blue (Periwinkle blue and Indigo, with gray around the edges to give it some depth).
I then lined up the Big Balloon stencil* around the image to give an area within which to add my background scene. I placed the Snowfall stencil over the top and used it to draw the snow with my white pencil. Removing the stencils, I coloured the snow in white, with Periwinkle Blue shading, then added in the sky background with Indigo, layered with a dark grey toward the bottom.

For my sentiment, I used the This Hug’s For You stamp set*, and stamped “warm winter hugs” in white pigment ink above the scene. To finish, I added some stitching detail around the edge with a white gelli roll pen.
I really hope you like this card – I’m sure it doesn’t stand a chance against all of the amazing colourists (is that a word?) in the competition this year, but I enjoyed the process and I love the finished card, so that’s a win for me!

Thanks again for joining me – see you next time!
*sorry – these are older products that I can’t find a link to!
